Mustangs Win Arizona Mountain Shootout

Women golfers establish team record in 36-hole event as they cruise to an 11-shot win over the field

Cal Poly earned its first women’s golf tournament victory in almost two years on Tuesday, capturing the Northern Arizona University Mountain Shootout by 11 strokes.
Coach Scott Cartwright’s team carded a record-setting 36-hole, four-person 606 total on the 6,032-yard, par-73 Continental Country Club course in Flagstaff, Ariz.
The Poly cumulative score is a record best for the team that was started in the 2000 season.
Ferris State was second at 617 followed by Sacramento State at 727. There were seven schools in the two-day tournament.
Last week the Mustangs finished second in the season-opening North Texas Women’s Classic.
On Monday, the Mustangs carded a four-person 302 total, a school record, and followed that with a 304 Tuesday.
Individually, freshman Julia Heath and sophomore Elsie Walker finished tied for fifth place with five-over-par 151 totals. Heath had a 77 Tuesday while Walker carded a 76. Heath also led the Mustang scorers in Texas last week.
Hannah Brabb and Stephanie Yocum shared eighth place with 152 totals. Brabb
shot 76 Tuesday while Yocum checked in with a 75.
Jessica Huss of Atascadero completed Cal Poly’s scoring with a 78 Tuesday and a 157 total for 18th place.
Individual winner was Anna Booth of San Diego State with a 74-74--148 total, one stroke ahead of Aztec teammate Maki Kamimura.
In the 2004-’05 season, the women’s golf team grabbed three tournament wins – all 36 hole events. The most recent was the Cougar Invitational, hosted by Cal State San Marcos, a tournament played Feb. 28 and March 1. Their winning 36-hole total in that tourney was 308-311—619, the old team record for a 36-hole event.
Cal Poly returns to action Oct. 3-4 at the Wolfpack Invitational hosted by the University of Nevada at the D’Andrea Golf Club in Reno.
The women’s team hosts a tournament at Cypress Ridge Golf Course Nov. 6 and 7.
