Mustangs Finish Fourth in Wolf Pack Invitational
Cal Poly, 14 strokes behind the leader after the first two rounds of play Tuesday, settled for fourth place in the Wolf Pack Invitational hosted by the University of Nevada on Wednesday at the D'Andrea Country Club in Sparks, Nev.
Two weeks after earning its first women's golf tournament victory in two years, capturing the Northern Arizona University Mountain Shootout by 11 strokes, Cal Poly finished 28 strokes behind team champion Nevada with a four-person 948 total on the par 72, 6,044-yard course.
There were at least a couple bright spots the women's team came away with.
Hannah Brabb, a Cal Poly freshman from Winter Park High School in Maitland, Fla., was one stroke off the lead held by five golfers Tuesday. She remained in sixth place in the final individual standings, carding a 78 Wednesday for a 54-hole 231 total, six strokes behind individual winner Nicole deGennaro of Nevada.
Also, Cal Poly Coach Scott Cartwright had pointed to this tournament before the season started, saying the team needed to show improvement from last year's last-place finish in the Wolf Pack event.
Last year the team finished the 54 holes with a 991 total. The women finished 43 shots better this time around.
Nevada's DeGennaro carded a final-round 73 for a nine-over-par 225 total, followed by Therese Nilsson of Lamar with a 73 and a 227 total and Lesan Gouge of Texas-San Antonio and Melanie DeLeon of Nevada, both with 228 totals.
Cal Poly's Elsie Walker finished in a tie for 13th place after an 84 Wednesday for a 237 total while Jessica Huss carded a final-round 76 for a 238 total and 16th place.
Other Cal Poly scorers were Allison Wing, who finished in a tie for 24th place with a final-round 79 and a 245 total; and Maddy Fletcher, who shot an 81 for a 256 total and 35th place.
Sacramento State finished in second place, 13 strokes behind Nevada, while Northern Iowa was third with a 940 total. Nevada and Sacramento State were tied for the team lead after 36 holes.
Cal Poly will compete in the Lady Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State on Oct. 16-17 at The Auld Course in Chula Vista.
